Sloppy Joes

Ground beef in a tangy, sweet, slightly spicy homemade sauce on a toasted bun. Way better than anything from a can.

EasyPrep: 5 minCook: 25 minServes 4Stovetop

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef, any fat percentage
  • 2 tbsp barbecue sauce
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • Hot sauce to taste
  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Smoked paprika
  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted
  • Olive oil (if using lean ground beef)

Assembly

  1. 1.If using lean ground beef, add a little olive oil to your pan. If using 80/20, you won't need extra oil.
  2. 2.Brown 1.5 lbs of ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up as it cooks. Get it about 80-90% done.
  3. 3.If using fattier beef, drain off the excess fat.
  4. 4.Season the beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika.
  5. 5.In a small bowl, mix together about 2 tbsp barbecue sauce, 2 tbsp ketchup, 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp yellow mustard, and hot sauce to taste.
  6. 6.Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and stir everything together.
  7. 7.Turn the heat to low and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
  8. 8.Toast your buns and pile the meat on.

The Story

I really like Sloppy Joes. The homemade sauce is dead simple — barbecue sauce, ketchup, a little hot sauce, Worcestershire, and mustard. Let it simmer low until it thickens up and you've got something way better than anything from a can. If you're using a fattier ground beef like 80/20, drain the excess fat before adding the sauce. If you're using something lean like 90/10, a little oil in the pan first and you're good.
